[2021] Notable Hotel Architecture Firms in California + Projects in Planning

Who are some of the top hospitality architecture firms in California?  Read on for more on the California design teams that are making it happen and the new hotel developments that embody their work.

For obvious reasons, the COVID-19 pandemic has altered many a travel plan. Not only does that mean that hotels have had to deal with limited guests and availability, but it also means that hotel construction sites all over the country often faced delays or cancelations altogether.  Despite the challenges that come with organizing significant manual labor while COVID-19 has turned the world on its head, many architecture firms have projects all over California for 2021.

Of course, even as architects have continued to plan construction projects, the pandemic has almost definitely altered the way those plans take shape. There has been a change in design trends as firms look to limit the virus’s ability to spread within their hotels. As such, many plans involve new and retrofit work to support guests’ and workers’ health and wellness by installing higher-quality ventilation systems, touchless and self-service technology, and safer, often anti-bacterial materials. For example, glass doors and hard flooring are frequently replacing shower curtains and carpets, respectively.

Based on data from BuildCentral’s HotelMarketData about the number of rooms in planning for this year, here are some notable hotel architects and projects in California for 2021.

Gensler:

First up is Gensler, which has 2,342 rooms on the docket across California for 2021. The firm is charged with building a new tower for the JW Marriot Los Angeles L.A. LIVE. BuildCentral has been keeping tabs on this project since 2015, and the construction is still in its planning and approval stage. Renderings for the new expansion have been reviewed by the Downtown Los Angeles Neighborhood Council’s Planning and Land Use Committee.
