Acute care hospital projects account for 61 percent of all planned and current projects that MedicalConstructionData is currently keeping tabs on in Pennsylvania. What’s more is that renovations account for a large majority of those acute care hospital projects. With that in mind, we’re digging into Pennsylvania’s top acute care hospital renovation projects to give you the lay of the land for one acute care hospital construction’s busiest states.

Acute care hospital renovations represent 57 percent of Pennsylvania’s planned and current medical projects.
Take a look at the below Geospex heatmap, which displays Pennsylvania’s most active regions for planned and current acute care hospital construction. Pittsburgh and Philadelphia account for 15 and 13 percent of the state’s projects, respectively. With regard to dollars in planning, however, Philadelphia accounts for 49 percent of planned spending on acute care projects in Pennsylvania, while Pittsburgh is responsible for 29 percent.

Pennsylvania has over $5 billion in its planned acute care hospital construction pipeline, with most of its nearly 400 planned & current projects concentrated in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.
Before getting into some of Pennsylvania’s top acute care hospital renovation projects, though, let’s clear up something fundamental that isn’t always obvious:
What is acute care at a hospital?
Acute care is a term typically reserved for inpatient medical care at a hospital or any other healthcare facility where patient stays are often short-term for temporary surgery or treatment.
This distinction is important because in medical construction, different medical facilities are often lumped into the same projects. Acute care hospital renovation projects may, therefore, involve and necessitate a broad range of materials and resources
