Which Big Tech firms are building data centers?
Read on for more about the technology companies behind recent data center construction projects across the U.S. including states like Virginia, Minnesota, Indiana, and Missouri.
Make no mistake: when you save something to the cloud, it isn’t just flying around in the sky. Instead, it resides in what are sometimes known as mission-critical data centers. In fact, data centers account for 1 percent of global electricity demand annually.
As you’ll see, many Big Tech data center projects we’re tracking are located in or around the Midwest. This is due to lower taxes and cheaper building and maintenance costs in these areas.

FAQS
What is a data center?
A data center is a storage facility for cloud-based information. Large companies with expansive client bases like Alphabet, Amazon, Facebook, and Microsoft often use them to house their consumers' data.
Where are data centers?
Unlike brick-and-mortar institutions, data centers don't rely on foot traffic to fulfill their purposes. As such, they aren't typically located in urban areas and instead are usually built in more rural, unpopulated, and low-traffic areas.
User information isn’t going anywhere, which means companies that are constantly accruing large amounts of their consumers’ data continually need to find new places to house it in a cost-efficient manner.
Remember, though, that as more data centers sprout up, the amount of real estate available for new data centers shrinks. There’s a finite amount of room for these facilities, and there’s a finite amount of energy to spend on them, but for now, these companies are moving forward with their plans, often touting renewable energy-fed projects in the process.
